Shopping Smart: Beware Gray Market Goods!

Friday, November 28th, 2008

So you’re shopping for a new camera, and you find an online site or mail-order seller offering the model you want at a price way below most places. Watch out – if you bite, you’re probably going to wind up with so-called gray-market goods. These are products that resellers buy outside the official channels set up by the manufacturer. For example, a gray-market seller may purchase cameras in a foreign market where manufacturers have set prices lower than in your country. Then those goods are imported to your neck of the woods and sold to unwary consumers, who discover too late that their new camera isn’t protected by the manufacturer’s warranty because it wasn’t bought through the official channel. On top of that, your “bargain” camera may arrive without its battery charger or some other standard component (which the gray-market seller will be happy to provide at an extra cost) or include software or manuals written in the language of the country for which the camera was originally intended.

In other words, that old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” definitely applies when it comes to buying a digital camera!
