Planning Your Vacation - Find Out What’s Going On

Wherever you’re going, you have a reason for going though. Maybe there’s a big amusement park, family ties, or the best collection of pocket watches the world has yet to produce. But there’s a lot more out there, and the Internet makes it easier than ever to find out what you can do when you get there. Be sure to check these sources out before you get on the plane or in the car.

Most major newspapers have comprehensive websites available for free, so start checking them out a week or two before you head out. You’ll get a sense of what’s going on and find out what special events are on the calendar.

Larger cities usually also have free weekly publications that focus on entertainment and other happenings. Checking them out a couple weeks before you head out is a good idea, too. These publications usually get deeper into special events than larger newspapers can do.

Use services like Technorati or just run a Google search on local blogs to get a sense of what’s happening in the destination, too. The quick feedback from bloggers can help you make some quick decisions that dramatically improve your plans. For example, responses I’d get from bloggers in New Orleans (while I was blogging on vacation, no less) helped me find some great clubs and restaurants.

Do your research online, and you’ll find more to love about your vacation. A little effort goes a long way.
