Getting What You Need On The Internet - Photos, Pt. 2
Now that you’ve got your photo editors in place, you’ve got to find a place to put them so others can see them. There are a staggering amount of choices here, but they break down into a few categories.
- Photo hosting sites
- Social networking sites
- Blog sites
The most popular photo hosting services are Yahoo’s Flickr and Google’s Photobucket. You just set up an account, upload your photos, and use the links to post on other sites or to send to others for their personal viewing. These services also add other functions, like slideshows and special effects. Be sure to check for storage limits, and always remember that these photos will be around for awhile - make sure you want others to see them before you post them. There are security and permission settings you can use to curtail access to your photos, but it’s always better to keep really private photos private by not posting them at all.
Social networks like MySpace and Facebook offer photo hosting capabilities with your account, and your friends will be able to see all of your photos simply by navigating to your page. In addition to a profile picture, you’ll be able to group the photos into albums or slideshows as well. You can also mark the photos as private or for friends only.
If you’re using a service like WordPress or Blogger, you can upload photos as part of a post. These services aren’t necessarily geared towards hosting photos exclusively, but it will still give you a link to send out or post.
