iPhone App Mini-Review: The Magic of Shazam
I’ve had my iPhone since time immemorial (or at least since June 29, 2007). And I’ve been testing iPhone apps since the day they first became available (which was July 11, 2008). The bottom line is that I’ve tried literally hundreds of iPhone apps over the last few months and only a handful have lasted longer than a week or two on my iPhone. So here’s a mini-review of Shazam, one of that handful of free iPhone Apps still on my iPhone, and one of the few I love enough to recommend it to you without hesitation.
If you’ve ever heard a song somewhere and said to yourself, “I love this song but I have no idea who sings it or what it’s called,” have I’ve got good news for you…
Shazam, one of my favorite free iPhone applications, will tell you the name of that song, who sings it, and much more, all in under a minute.
It works like magic—just launch Shazam, tap the Tag Now button, and then point your iPhone in the general direction of the song. In just a few seconds Shazam will (usually) identify it.
But wait — there’s more. In addition to the name of the song, it also tells you the artist’s name, record label, album name, and genre. Then, you can preview or buy the song in the iTunes Store, watch its video on YouTube, or send an email about it to a friend.
I must admit that while it works great with contemporary music — pop, rock, hip-hop, and such, it doesn’t work nearly as well with genres such as jazz or classical. Still, it’s great to have Shazam in your pocket and you sure can’t beat the price (it’s free).
